The old way: one dedicated ANPR camera per lane Traditional ANPR is hardware-first. Each approach or lane needs a purpose-built camera with the right lens, exposure and IR to catch a fast-moving, retroreflective plate cleanly — plus, often, an on-site processing unit and a per-camera software licence. Add a second entrance or a new use case and you buy more boxes. It's accurate, but it's costly to roll out and frozen the day it's installed. How it works, in four steps Connect the stream. Point an existing camera at Fortix (RTSP/ONVIF, or through the same platform your securely connected cameras already use over VPN). The cloud reads the plate. Every frame containing a plate is processed server-side by the latest AI model — no local compute required. You get structured, searchable data. A log of every read you can search by plate or time, live hotlist/watchlist alerts, and whitelist matches. Act on it. Trigger a barrier, alert a control room, flag an overstay, or push the event into your VMS or back office. The latest model — and it stays the latest Because the recognition runs in the cloud, the model improves continuously: better accuracy on dirty, angled or foreign plates, stronger night performance, and support for new formats — with nothing to reflash on the camera. A dedicated ANPR camera is frozen at whatever firmware it shipped with; a cloud model gets better while your hardware stays exactly where it is. What "any camera" really needs (the honest bit) Fortix runs on cameras you already own — but the camera still has to give the model something legible. In practice that means: Enough pixels on the plate — as a rough rule, 100+ pixels of plate width. A well-framed 2–5MP camera on the lane is usually plenty. A sensible angle — roughly head-on, within about 30° horizontally and vertically. Extreme side or top-down views defeat any ANPR, cloud or not. Usable light — daylight, or IR/white-light illumination at night. On fast approaches, shutter speed matters more than megapixels, because motion blur is the real enemy.
