How to Activate & Set Up a 4G GPS Tracker
Activate, register and mount your 4G GPS tracker for asset, personal or livestock tracking.
This guide covers activating a 4G GPS tracker and getting live location and alerts on your phone. You will need the tracker, its charging cable, an activated data SIM if the device is not pre-fitted with one, and a smartphone with the tracking app or platform. Everything runs over mobile data, so no WiFi is needed.
Which SIM and data plan?
Most 4G GPS trackers use a nano or micro data SIM, and some ship with one already fitted and activated. Data use is very low because the device only sends small position updates, so a small monthly allowance or a low-cost IoT data plan is plenty. If you fitted your own SIM, make sure it is activated and PIN-locking is disabled. For trackers that roam widely or work in rural areas, a multi-network SIM that hops to the strongest signal keeps location updates reliable.
Frequently asked questions
The tracker will not get a GPS fix. What should I do?
GPS needs a clear view of the sky, so take the device outdoors, away from buildings and metal, and allow several minutes for the first fix. Confirm the battery is charged and the SIM is active with data. Indoors, in deep cover or inside a metal enclosure, the fix will be slow or missing until it gets a clearer sky view.
The device shows offline in the app. How do I bring it back?
Being offline usually means no mobile data rather than no GPS. Check the SIM is activated, has credit or an active plan and is seated correctly. Confirm the tracker is charged and in an area with coverage. Restart the device, and if it stays offline, re-check the SIM and the reporting interval settings in the app.
The battery drains far too quickly. Why?
Frequent position reporting is the main drain. Increase the reporting interval so it updates less often, and enable any sleep or motion-wake mode so the tracker rests when still. Constant live tracking uses the most power. For long-life asset tracking, a longer interval dramatically extends the time between charges.
The location on the map looks wrong or jumps around. What causes this?
In built-up areas, signals bounce off buildings and cause the plotted point to drift, and a weak fix reduces accuracy. Wait for a stronger fix in open sky, and confirm the device firmware and app are up to date. A stationary tracker may also show small wander, which is normal and settles once it has a solid fix.
My geofence and movement alerts are not arriving. How do I fix them?
Check the geofence is saved and active, and that movement, geofence and low-battery alerts are switched on in the app. Ensure app notifications are allowed in your phone settings. The tracker must be online and reporting for alerts to fire, so confirm its status is live and its reporting interval is frequent enough to detect the event.
