What an edge AI box actually is An edge AI computer is a small, rugged box with a dedicated AI processor — an NVIDIA GPU or a Rockchip NPU — that runs computer-vision models on your camera streams on-site, in real time. Instead of recording video and hoping someone reviews it, the box watches every frame as it happens: detecting people and vehicles, reading number plates, counting, classifying — flagging what matters and ignoring what doesn't. It sits between your cameras and your network. The cameras feed it video; it feeds you events. Why the edge beats the cloud for surveillance "Just send it to the cloud" is the default answer, and for a lot of sites it's the wrong one. Four reasons: Latency — an alert is only useful before the trailer's hooked up, not after. On-device inference triggers in milliseconds; a cloud round-trip over a congested 4G link does not. Bandwidth and data cost — streaming 24/7 video off a remote site over a SIM is ruinous. An edge box sends events and clips, not the whole firehose — often a 90%+ cut in data. On an off-grid solar + 4G/5G tower, that's the difference between viable and not. Privacy and GDPR — footage analysed on the box never leaves the site. Serious jobs (many streams, ANPR, several models at once, higher frame rates) — you want tens of TOPS and up. Buy the headroom you'll actually use.
