Setting up a secure VPN camera link

You need three things: the VPN camera, a data SIM, and a WireGuard endpoint for it to connect to. The simplest, best-supported endpoint is an Airlink 5G router — pair the camera to it and the encrypted tunnel comes up automatically, putting the camera on your network with no port forwarding.

If you already run your own WireGuard server you can point the cameras at that instead and pull every site into one secure network. Either way, choose a data plan sized for your stream (a single 1080p feed on motion is modest; continuous 4K PTZ needs more), and use a private APN if you want the cameras completely off the public internet.

What is a VPN camera and why WireGuard?

A VPN camera builds an encrypted tunnel back to your network rather than opening a port to the internet or using a third-party cloud. WireGuard is a modern, fast, audited VPN protocol — it gives you a secure, low-latency link with none of the exposure of port forwarding or DDNS.

How does it connect to an Airlink router?

The camera's WireGuard client dials into your Airlink 5G router (or your own VPN endpoint) on power-up. Once the tunnel is up, the camera appears on your local network — you view and manage it as if it were plugged in on-site, fully encrypted.

Do I need port forwarding or a static IP?

No. WireGuard connects outbound, so there is nothing to port-forward and no static IP required. This is why VPN cameras work on ordinary UK data SIMs and private APNs, even behind CGNAT where port forwarding is impossible.

Is it more secure than a DDNS or P2P cloud camera?

Yes. With no open inbound ports and no third-party cloud in the path, the attack surface is dramatically smaller and your video never traverses someone else's servers — important for GDPR, data-residency and critical-infrastructure sites.

Which SIM and resolution options are available?

Any UK data SIM works (EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three), and private APNs are supported. Cameras are available in 5MP and 8MP with long-range PTZ zoom from 5x up to 30x.
