Which SIM and Data Plan Does a 4G Camera Actually Need?

The camera is the easy part of a 4G CCTV purchase. The SIM is where deployments quietly succeed or fail: the wrong network on a rural site means no camera at all, the wrong plan means either bill shock or a camera that stops uploading mid-month, and one overlooked APN setting can keep brand-new hardware offline for a week of head-scratching. Here is how to get the SIM decision right first time. Last updated: July 2026. Start with data: what will the camera actually use? Usage is driven by configuration, not by the camera model. The three profiles, covered in detail in our 4G camera data usage guide: Motion clips only — 2–10 GB per month for a well-tuned camera, driven mostly by how busy the scene is. Resolution matters: 2K clip uploads use roughly double the data of 1080p for the same events, so only upload at the resolution you actually need for identification. Motion clips plus regular live viewing — 10–30 GB per month. Live view is the data hog; a team that likes checking the site on their phones will dominate the bill. Continuous cloud recording — 150–400+ GB per month per camera. On 4G this means an unlimited plan and a strong, stable signal, and is worth it only for genuinely high-security sites. Over-sensitive motion detection inflates all three profiles — vegetation, headlights and wildlife all cost gigabytes. Tune detection zones and sensitivity in the first week and the data plan gets cheaper for years. Single-network vs multi-network SIMs A consumer SIM from one network is the cheapest per gigabyte — and the wrong choice for most camera deployments. The camera is going wherever the security problem is, not wherever one network happens to be strong. Multi-network (roaming) SIMs connect to whichever UK network is strongest at the camera's location and fail over automatically if that network degrades. They cost slightly more per GB, and on rural and edge-of-coverage sites that premium buys the difference between a working camera and an ornament. They also remove the guesswork when a camera redeploys to a new site — the SIM sorts the network out itself. For fixed urban sites with proven strong coverage from a specific network, a single-network IoT SIM is a legitimate saving; everywhere else, multi-network is the default we fit. Avoid ordinary consumer pay-monthly SIMs in cameras entirely: many operators prohibit them in unattended devices, some CGNAT and traffic-management setups interfere with camera platforms, and a plan sized for a phone behaves badly when a camera empties it in week two. Check the signal before you commit Coverage maps are marketing; the only signal that matters is at the mounting point, at bracket height. Take a phone (ideally two, on different networks) to the actual position, check 4G signal and run a speed test — a camera needs modest bandwidth (1–2 Mbps upload is comfortable) but it needs it reliably. Signal at head height by the van proves nothing about the top of a 4-metre pole; if in doubt, hoist the phone. On marginal sites an external antenna on the camera often turns one bar into three — specify it at purchase rather than retrofitting. The APN gotcha The most common "faulty camera" we diagnose is a working camera with the wrong APN. The Access Point Name tells the modem how to reach the network, and IoT and multi-network SIMs almost always need it set manually — the camera will show a SIM present, maybe even signal bars, and stubbornly refuse to pass data until the APN matches the SIM provider's exact string (and occasionally a username and password). Get the APN details from the SIM supplier at purchase, set them during bench testing at the office, and confirm the camera uploads before anyone drives to site. What it should cost per month Realistic UK expectations in 2026: a well-configured motion-clip camera on a multi-network IoT plan runs £5–£15 per month; a camera with regular live viewing £15–£30; continuous recording needs an unlimited plan at £20–£40+. Start each new camera on a generous plan for the first month, read the actual usage, then right-size. Across a fleet, a shared data pool smooths out the busy cameras against the quiet ones and usually beats per-camera plans.
