ATEX-Certified CCTV for Oil, Gas and Chemical Sites: UK Specification Guide

Most UK CCTV procurement happens in environments where the camera's only job is to record. In ATEX-zoned environments — oil platforms, gas processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical storage, hydrogen energy plants, certain food production sites — the camera also has to not cause an explosion. This raises the procurement complexity significantly. Standard CCTV cameras can ignite an explosive atmosphere in three ways: internal electrical sparks, hot surface temperatures, and electromagnetic radiation from the radio/Wi-Fi modules. Every component inside an ATEX-rated camera has been engineered to eliminate all three risks for the specific zone it's certified for. This guide walks through how to read an ATEX certification, what the zones mean for your site, and how to procure without being misled by suppliers who don't fully understand the standard. Reading an ATEX certification A typical UK ATEX camera certification looks like: Ex II 2 G Ex db IIB+H2 T6 Gb Decoded: II — equipment group II (surface industries; group I is mining) 2 — category 2 (suitable for Zone 1 hazardous areas) G — gas atmospheres (D is for dust) Ex db — protection type "flameproof enclosure" IIB+H2 — gas group; H2 explicitly added means hydrogen-rated T6 — surface temperature class (T6 = max 85°C, T5 = 100°C, etc.) Gb — equipment protection level (Gb = high; Ga = very high) The two most important fields for procurement are: The category (2, 1) — tells you which zone the camera is certified for The temperature class (T5, T6) — must be below the auto-ignition temperature of any flammable substance at your site Get either wrong and you've bought hardware that's certified for somewhere else. Zone classifications that affect camera spec UK industrial sites are classified by HSE under DSEAR: Zone 0 / Zone 20 Continuous explosive atmosphere — inside fuel tanks, mixers, dust silos. Cameras here require category 1 ATEX rating. Very few products exist; most procurement specifies sapphire-windowed cameras with all-stainless construction. Zone 1 / Zone 21 Explosive atmosphere likely during normal operation — fuel forecourt pump bays, chemical reactor halls, grain mill silos. Cameras require category 2 rating. This is the most common procurement zone — a broad product range exists, prices £2,500–£8,000 per camera. Zone 2 / Zone 22 Explosive atmosphere only during fault conditions — most of the perimeter and walking areas at a refinery, the storage yards at a chemical plant. Cameras require category 3 rating. Wider product range, prices £1,200–£3,500 per camera. Non-classified Office areas, exterior carparks, the staff canteen. Standard CCTV cameras. The procurement trap: a site DSEAR review often finds that 80% of your camera locations are in non-classified areas, 15% in Zone 2, and 5% in Zone 1. Don't buy a Zone 1-rated camera for a Zone 2 location — the cost is 2-3× higher with no operational benefit. What "intrinsically safe" actually means Three certification mechanisms produce ATEX-compliant cameras: Flameproof enclosure (Ex d) The camera's housing contains any internal spark. Heavy, all-metal, expensive. Most common for Zone 1 fixed cameras. Increased safety (Ex e) Internal design eliminates spark sources entirely (no relays, no brush motors, no high-voltage components). Lighter than Ex d but more spec-constrained. Intrinsic safety (Ex i) The camera's circuits operate at energy levels below the spark-ignition threshold. Used for low-power components (sensors, switches) rather than full IP camera assemblies. For procurement: a full IP camera in Zone 1 will almost always be Ex d (flameproof). Don't accept anything labelled just "explosion-resistant" or "weather-sealed" — those are marketing terms, not certifications. Communication and integration constraints ATEX cameras have constraints that affect your wider network design: No Wi-Fi inside hazardous zones The radio emissions from Wi-Fi modules are usually outside ATEX cert. Most ATEX cameras are wired (PoE+ via armoured fibre or copper), not Wi-Fi. 4G/cellular is sometimes allowed A few specific ATEX cameras carry cellular certification — they go through an additional EM testing regime. If your site has no fixed cabling, this is the only path. Expect a 30-40% premium over Wi-Fi-disabled equivalents. Cabling has its own ATEX rating The conduit, glands, and junction boxes between the camera and the safe-area NVR must also be ATEX-rated. Installation cost is typically 2× the camera cost — a £4,000 camera is a £12,000 fully-installed asset. Procurement framework For any ATEX CCTV project: Start with a DSEAR review — get the zone classification right before any camera spec Match cert to zone — Zone 1 = Cat 2, Zone 2 = Cat 3. Don't over-spec. Verify the gas group covers your atmosphere — IIA is most petroleum products; IIB includes ethylene and most solvents; IIC (or IIB+H2) covers hydrogen and acetylene Verify the temp class is below auto-ignition — T6 covers everything; T4 (135°C max surface) doesn't cover hydrogen-rich atmospheres Get the installation costed properly — armoured conduit, ATEX glands, junction boxes are all priced separately Confirm the certifying body — UK-recognised bodies include SGS, BASEEFA, ITS, DEKRA. A "Chinese ATEX certificate" without a recognised notified body is worth less than the paper.
