5G Routers Explained: CPE, Industrial Routers and Dongles — Which One Does Your Site Need?

Ask for "a 5G router" and you could be handed four completely different boxes: a weatherproof dish for a pole, a DIN-rail router for a cabinet, a desktop unit for an office, or a dongle the size of a matchbox. They all do 5G. They are not interchangeable — and the shape matters more than the spec sheet, because it decides where the signal gets caught and what happens to it next. Last updated: July 2026. Why 5G at all? Where 4G gives a site tens of Mbps, a decent 5G connection delivers hundreds — real fibre-class bandwidth with no trench and no waiting list. That changes what a connection can carry: multiple high-resolution camera streams instead of one, cloud backup that finishes overnight, a whole office or site cabin online from one antenna. (If you're weighing whether your CCTV actually needs it, we've written a separate honest answer: 4G vs 5G for CCTV — for a single camera, 4G usually wins on cost.) The catch is that 5G's fastest bands don't travel as far or through walls as well, which is exactly why the shape of the hardware matters. Outdoor CPE — catch the signal where it's strongest An outdoor CPE (customer premises equipment) mounts on a pole or wall, catches 5G outside where the signal is clean, and feeds the building by cable — the single biggest performance upgrade for most rural and edge-of-coverage sites, often turning an unusable indoor signal into hundreds of Mbps. Suncomm CP520 X75 — dual-SIM, 3000Mbps-class, IP67; our most proven all-rounder for farms, smallholdings and rural business connections (there's also a camouflage version for discreet installs). Airlink 5GODU-X75 and Airlink ODU-X62 — industrial-grade outdoor units, the X62 on 3GPP Release 16 silicon for tougher deployments. Choose an outdoor CPE when: the site is fixed, signal indoors is poor, and you want maximum speed per pound. This is the right answer more often than any other box on this page. Industrial 5G routers — for cabinets, fleets and infrastructure An industrial router is built to live in an equipment cabinet, run unattended for years and feed several devices — with serial ports, dual SIM failover and proper remote management. This is the category we've just rebuilt around exact part numbers, so engineers can buy precisely the configuration they spec: Milesight UR75-504AE-W2 (£391) — 5G, Wi-Fi, GPS, five Gigabit ports; the UR75-504AE-P-W2 (£406) adds PoE PSE so it powers a camera or access point directly. Global-modem 500GL variants available for multi-region estates. Milesight UF51-504AE (£445) — an IP67 industrial CPE: outdoor-rated like the consumer dishes but with RS485, DI/DO and PoE PD, so it bolts straight into telemetry and CCTV infrastructure. A Wi-Fi 6 version (£521) covers site-wide wireless from the same box. Choose industrial when: the router feeds equipment rather than people — CCTV towers, EV chargers, pumping stations, signage, vehicles — and a failed connection means a callout. Indoor CPE and dongles — offices and embedded kit For an office, shop or site cabin with reasonable signal, an indoor unit like the Airlink CPE 12 (5G + Wi-Fi 6) is plug-and-play broadband: SIM in, switch on, whole team online — ideal as instant connectivity while you wait out a fibre install lead time, or as permanent broadband where fibre never arrives. At the other end of the scale, the Milesight UF31-554AE (£426) is a 5G modem dongle — USB 3.0 powered, tiny, designed to be built into things: kiosks, medical carts, industrial PCs, prototypes. It's the answer when the question is "how do we put 5G inside our product?" The decision in one pass Poor signal indoors, fixed site? Outdoor CPE on a pole — CP520 for value, ODU-X62 for industrial spec. Feeding equipment, cabinets, or anything unattended? Industrial — UR75 for routing and PoE, UF51 for outdoor mounting with industrial I/O. Office or cabin, decent signal? Indoor CPE 12 and done. Building 5G into a machine? UF31 dongle. Not sure the site even needs 5G? Read the 4G vs 5G guide first — 4G is still the right call for single-camera sites.
