What 4G and 5G actually change Both 4G and 5G CCTV work the same way: the camera carries a SIM and streams over the mobile network instead of a fixed broadband line, so you can put it anywhere with coverage and no router. The difference is the pipe. 5G offers more bandwidth and lower latency than 4G — in plain terms, it can push more video, faster, with less lag. That sounds decisive until you ask the only question that matters: does your camera need that extra pipe? When 4G is genuinely enough (most sites) For the vast majority of UK deployments, a well-specified 4G camera does everything you need. A single 2–5MP camera streaming H.265 with on-camera AI doing the heavy lifting generates a modest data load — 4G handles it comfortably, even at night. A compound running several 4K cameras at once can saturate a 4G link. 5G gives the headroom. Continuous high-bitrate recording to the cloud, rather than on-camera storage with event clips. Constant 4K upload is data-hungry. Low-latency live operations — event control rooms, crowd monitoring, or PTZ cameras an operator is actively steering, where a second of lag matters. Future-proofing a fixed, long-life install in a confirmed 5G area where you expect demand to grow. In short: 5G is about volume and immediacy, not picture quality. A 4G and a 5G camera with the same sensor produce the same image — 5G just moves more of it, faster. The honest cost trade-off 5G cameras and 5G data plans generally cost more than their 4G equivalents, and 5G can draw more power — which matters on a solar, off-grid site where every watt is budgeted for the worst winter month. Paying a 5G premium for a single perimeter camera that streams a few event clips a day is spending money on a pipe you'll never fill. Conversely, under-specifying a busy multi-camera event site on 4G to save a few pounds can mean dropped frames when you need them most. The right answer is matched to the workload. A simple way to decide Ask three questions: How many cameras and at what resolution stream from one spot? One or two cameras up to 5MP with event-based recording: 4G. Several 4K cameras streaming continuously from one location: consider 5G. Is the coverage there? Check the mobile signal at the exact mounting point. No confirmed 5G means a 5G camera buys you nothing today. How is it powered? Off-grid solar pushes you toward the lower-draw 4G option unless the workload truly demands 5G. If you answered "a couple of cameras, event-based, possibly off-grid," you want 4G. If you answered "lots of cameras, continuous 4K, mains power, confirmed 5G," 5G starts to pay for itself.
